International Visitors

With the aim of researching the international visitor market more thoroughly, Cumbria Tourism wanted to talk directly to the county's overseas visitors themselves. In order to do this on a minimal budget a short self-complete survey was devised covering visitor profile, purpose of visit, length of stay, transport, information sources, motivations, experiences, and activities undertaken or planned during the stay.  Tourism businesses throughout the county agreed to help distribute questionnaires; these included accommodation providers, Tourist Information Centres and visitor attractions.  The data collection period ran for 12 months, from January 2007 to January 2008 and by the end of January 2008, 382 completed questionnaires had been returned for analysis.

We also obtain information on our overseas markets from the Office for National Statistics International Passenger Survey.  Around 250,000 interviews are carried out each year as part of this sample survey, with travellers as they enter or leave the UK
