Accommodation Occupancy Survey
In such a seasonal market assessing how well your business is doing from month to month can be challenging at the best of times. Each month around 500 accommodation providers participate in Cumbria Tourism's occupancy surveys. The data is analysed and averages are calculated for the region.
How can participating help your business? Monthly occupancy averages for the region, including other figures such as lengths of stay and party size, can provide invaluable market intelligence for businesses to benchmark themselves and assess their performance against regional averages.
Confidential personal results are also provided to each business as a means of recording business performance. The use of these figures go beyond just using them for business planning and performance monitoring, but can also provide:
- figures for business plans if applying for finance
- supporting evidence for claiming rate relief or accessing grants
- evidence of occupancy levels if you ever decide to sell your business or to claim on insurance
An annual report is also provided to assess the trends in the past year and compare performance amongst different areas in the region and different types of businesses.

How does it work? Participants complete an initial profile form, and then a simple data form each month, showing room, pitches or unit let rates. This data is then analysed by Cumbria Tourism, to produce regional occupancy rates and comparisons. Data forms are mailed out each month with postage paid envelopes for easy return.
