Making the Dream a Reality - The Tourism Strategy for Cumbria 2008-2018

Cumbria attracts both visitors and those who want to settle here and run businesses. Our environment, our culture and our way of life are fundamental to the success of tourism and the well-being of the people who live here. That is why we need a tourism strategy. A strategy that will guide the development of tourism both for our economic success but which will also be in sympathy with what makes Cumbria special.

The document has been the subject of extensive partner discussion and wider public consultation - it looks at the big picture outlining what we want for tourism in Cumbria and how we can realise that over the next decade.

The Bigger Picture

The Tourism Strategy for Cumbria has been guided by and sits within a framework of national and regional policies, the key ones being:-

  • Sustainable Tourism in England: A Framework for Action - published by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in March 2009, this document sets out the environmental and social challenges that the tourism industry currently faces, as well as ways in which everyone involved can help to meet them. The six Challenges to be addressed are:
Minimising environmental impact and resource use
Addressing the impact of tourism transport
Improving the quality and making holidays more accessible to all
Improving the quality of tourism jobs
Maintaining and enhancing community prosperity and quality of life
    Reducing the seasonality of demand

  • The Strategy for Tourism in England's Northwest, 2003 - 2010 - revised in 2007, the strategy provides the overarching policy context for development of the visitor economy in the region. It sits alongside the Regional Economic Strategy [RES] and seeks to build upon the opportunities presented by the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. download document

  • Cumbria Economic Strategy, 2009 - 2019 - published by Cumbria Vision in February 2009, the strategy underpins the delivery plans of a wide range of organisations coming together via membership of the Cumbria Strategic Partnership.

The Cumbria Economic Strategy has two twin Priorities of Energy (realising the opportunities of Energy and the Low Carbon Economy) and Destination (raising the attractiveness of "Destination Cumbria" as a place to invest, live, work and visit). Eleven strategic Action Plans, including one specifically on Tourism set out how the Strategy can be delivered.
