Starring Great Britain – Making Cumbria the star of the show
With latest research showing that more than 9 out of 10 potential visitors to the UK want to visit a film or TV location during their trip, it’s clear that film and TV shows are powerful motivators for travel.
Throughout 2025, Cumbria Tourism will be piggy-backing on VisitBritain’s ‘Starring Great Britain’ campaign to harness this trend and encourage more visitors to choose Cumbria and explore more.
From inclusions in British war-time classic The Dam Busters to Tom Cruise speed flying through the Lakes for Mission Impossible: Reckoning One, Cumbria has taken a starring role on the silver screen through the decades. You can see a timeline of the county’s movie highlights here.
This means ‘Starring Great Britain’ is a fantastic opportunity to shine the spotlight on Cumbria’s filming spots and highlight film and TV-inspired experiences – and for individual businesses to make the most of the this too.
As well as developing a wide range of visitor-facing digital and PR content, Cumbria Tourism will be working closely with VisitBritain and film partners like Creative England, and sharing tips to help you build bookable itineraries with travel trade as 2025 progresses.
How businesses can get involved:
Let us know about any famous film and TV linked to your business/location, so we can weave this into future content. Also register your interest in press and/or social influencer trips linked to these themes: pressoffice@cumbriatourism.org
Are you inspired to turn a local film or film link/location into an activity or experience for your customers to enjoy? Let us know if you are planning any themes tours or bookable visitor experiences we can use within our PR content.
You could be just what filmmakers are looking for, so why not put yourself forward as a future filming location? Cumbria Tourism is part of the Filming in England Partnership, so you can also register on Creative England’s free database of filming locations.
