The Three Valleys Project

The Three Valleys Project

The ‘Three Valleys’ project was all about promoting a change in how visitors travel around three very distinct areas of the Lake District, Cumbria – in order to improve access for visitors, residents and workers.

Funded by Westmorland and Furness Council through the Climate and Nature Partnership fund, the Three Valleys project was delivered in partnership by Cumbria Tourism (as the county’s Local Economy Visitor Partnership), The Lake District National Park Authority and Future Proof Cumbria.

Most international destinations who have quality visitor access work in partnership with local authorities, businesses and residents to deliver improved transport that fits their area’s needs. Applying this approach, we selected three areas which already had strong partnership groups on the ground and unique transport challenges.

They were the Ullswater and the Lowther Valley, the Langdale Valleys, and Hawkshead and the West of Windermere.

Together, we worked in these locations alongside Low Carbon Destinations to develop visions of what world-class visitor transport might look like in each area. Working back from these vision, project partners then developed Visitor Movement Action Plans for all three.

Priority actions for all three locations were identified and added to a 2025/26 Action/Delivery Plan, which is being delivered by the partnership working groups and overseen by the county’s ‘Strategic Visitor Management Group’.
