Lake District Virtual Travel Trade Showcase

In February 2021, 203 tourism buyers from across the World joined a selection of Lake District tourism businesses (plus an organisers’ stand) in a ‘Virtual Showcase’. This event was created to promote the Lake District, Cumbria and to help those buyers make their customers the happiest of tourists, learn about places to visit, places to stay, and to take refreshment in this wonderful region.

These 203 buyers logged in for 746 sessions during which they browsed the virtual stands, downloaded information (669 downloads) making 158 unscheduled instant video chats and fulfilled 234 pre-scheduled meetings. That’s an average of 18 appointments per exhibitor. One point that was made repeatedly in delegate feedback was how useful it was to have a ‘smaller platform’ that was ‘regionally focussed’.

The event was so successful that Tapir Travel Showcases in partnership with Cumbria Tourism is repeating the event on Wednesday 16th & Thursday 17th March 2022. They will be pooling resources to attract even more qualified delegates to come and learn more about what’s on offer.

The tourism landscape has changed pretty dramatically since the outbreak of Covid, although changes were afoot before that. Businesses who were concerned about the size of potential group visits can be assured that groups will be smaller with ‘curated itineraries’ created for smaller groups being the basis for new offers.

Cumbria Tourism has negotiated a discount on participation as an exhibitor which makes this opportunity very affordable which for CT members costs just £150+Vat (non-member rate £195+Vat).

A delegate feedback survey using data from 35 surveys showed that 100% of those who answered would attend another similar event and 88% would recommend attending to a colleague. 68.57% said they preferred this format to bigger national tourism buyer events and trade shows. Everyone discovered new products!

“A smaller platform was welcome as we are all getting Zoom fatigue and it was nice to have less appointments in one day, and to have enough time to chat (15 to 20 minutes rather than the 10 minutes generally allocated for the larger events)”

“It was one of the best things I’ve been to in a year. Best virtual trade event. More please”

“I am fairly young and new in the travel industry working for a coach firm. I found the showcase both interesting and that it gave me the opportunity to meet people in the business and learn more about different attractions. Thank you for your efforts!”
