Country Shows

With the main summer holiday season now underway, Cumbria Tourism is back on the road across Northern England attending a series of country shows.

Activity got underway at Northumberland County Show on Saturday 27 May, with the aim of encouraging visitors to plan and book ahead.

Taking place in Hexham, this annual event celebrates agriculture, farming and food, culture and heritage. It attracted around 30,000 people, giving the Cumbria Tourism team and their partners Northern Print Distribution (NPD) plenty of opportunities to meet directly with members of the public who may consider Cumbria for future stays.

Other popular events on the horizon will include the Royal Cheshire Show (Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 June 2023) and the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate (Tuesday 11 to Friday 14 July), which are both expected to attract around 35,000 visitors.

Later in the summer comes the Royal Lancashire Show (Friday 21 to Sunday 23 July) and the Chatsworth Country Fair at the beginning of September. The team will then be back in Cumbria for the two-day Westmorland County Show.

To help promote everything Cumbria has to offer to both new and returning visitors, tourism operators also have the chance to get involved by teaming up with Cumbria’s official Destination Management Organisation (DMO) to showcase their individual businesses.

Marketing Executive at Cumbria Tourism, Francine Bult, says, “We’re continuing to travel the length and breadth of Britain, representing our world-class destination and driving new business at a variety of public events and travel trade shows.

“Our attendance at these events is hugely successful to inspire visits and showcase our destination to a wide and engaged audience. They present a valuable opportunity to speak directly to potential visitors, gain their feedback and assist with enquiries.

“They also give businesses the chance to showcase their printed literature on our branded stand which is manned with representatives from Cumbria Tourism and our partners Northern Print Distribution (NPD), allowing us to represent individual business and product offerings without their staff needing to attend directly.”

Looking further ahead, Cumbria Tourism will also be showcasing the Lake District, Cumbria to travel agents, tour operators and group travel organisers at travel trade shows such as the Group Travel and Leisure Show in October and The British Tourism & Travel Show early next year.
