Garden extravaganza to celebrate Year of the English Garden
Askham Hall Gardens will become a blaze of colour, music and joie de vivre this June, with two new spectacular summer events marking both British Flowers Week and the Year of the English Garden.
Previously the family seat of the Earls of Lonsdale on the edge of the Lake District national park, the 13th century hall boasts 12 acre, grade II listed gardens with uninterrupted views of the River Lowther and surrounding countryside. Formal lawns, woodlands and meadows interweave with colourful terraces, an animal trail and even a 230 foot long double herbaceous border.
This summer, visitors can experience the gardens at their colourful best as Askham joins two national celebrations of the country’s horticultural gems with these two special events:
1. Summer Fete (Sunday 12 June, 11am-4pm) –
By day, Askham Hall Gardens will play host to an array of family activities including a treasure hunt around the animal trails, as well as garden tours, workshops and even flower arranging demonstrations.
There will also be an array of stallholders selling local produce, crafts and seasonal gifts in and around Askham’s stunning converted barn.
The kitchen garden is crammed with masses of veggie delights and is sure to whip up those appetites for a light lunch or afternoon tea in the Kitchen Garden Café. An outdoor oven will offer the chance to sample some authentic wood-fired pizza.
Free parking and entry to the barn. Garden entry on the day: £4 per adult, free for children. All stallholder fees and garden entry will go to the National Gardens Scheme for charity.
2. Cocktail Garden Party (Sunday 12 June, 4pm-9pm) –
By night, over 18s can enjoy an evening of cocktails, canapes and live jazz. With garden games including croquet on the front lawn, it will be a unique chance to soak in the atmosphere of the garden’s 700 year history as the sun goes down.
Sponsored by the iconic Lakes Distillery, just down the road at Bassenthwaite, charcuterie platters will be served courtesy of Askham Hall’s renowned Maître de Maison, Nico Chièze, and there will be a fully-licensed bar. The Kitchen Garden Café will also stay open for seasonal treats using ingredients straight off the estate.
£17.50 per person which includes two cocktails and canapés. Advance booking required. Also includes a half price tour of the Lakes Distillery.
Overnight stays at Askham Hall can also be booked for a special rate of £125 (limited availability).
