An upcoming event aimed at food and drink businesses will highlight how food and drink can drive visitors, jobs and growth along the Cumbria Coastal Route.

Coastal businesses in the Cumberland Council area are being invited to an inspirational morning on Wednesday 11 February, designed to showcase how they can collectively attract more visitors, strengthen the local economy and tell a more compelling coastal story.

‘Inspiring Food & Drink on the Cumbria Coastal Route’ hosted by Cumbria Tourism will bring together producers, cafés, pubs, restaurants and other visitor economy businesses to explore how local produce, heritage and creativity can be transformed into distinctive, authentic visitor experiences.

Attendees at Hunday Manor Hotel near Workington will hear from leading industry voices, including chef and food historian John Crouch, who will delve into the rich culinary history of the Cumbria Coast and explain how its ingredients and stories can be brought to life on today’s menus.

John says: “The study of food is fascinating, and the Cumbrian coast is rich with stories about where our ingredients originated and how they became an integral part of our culinary heritage. This event combines history, practical menu ideas and insight into local producers – it’s a must for local caterers and food businesses.”

Also speaking will be Jon Fell, Director of Food & Beverage at Osprey Management Group, who will focus on how businesses can harness the area’s uniqueness to stand out in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

He comments: “This event is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to connect, share ideas and learn from one another. It’s practical, inspiring and packed with insights that can genuinely help local food and drink businesses grow and thrive. I’m delighted to be involved.”

Additionally, attendees will get to hear from Val Ayre Chair of the Food Cumberland Partnership, giving an insight into initiatives connecting hospitality businesses with Cumbrian farmers, local food producers and suppliers. The programme will also include practical guidance from the Cumbria Tourism team on recruitment, hospitality careers, PR, agritourism and slow tourism. Rounding off the event, there will also be an opportunity to hear from a panel of local food & drink businesses who have been involved in the Cumbria Coastal Route project.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said: “Food, drink and hospitality is a key component of Cumberland’s economy. There is a great deal to enjoy from a simple soup and a sandwich to fine dining experiences – we have something to suit all tastes. This event is an opportunity for the whole industry to come together and be inspired to provide the very best visitor experience, and the warmest of Cumberland welcomes.”

The event forms part of the Cumbria Coastal Route project, which aims to unlock the potential of the coast’s natural, cultural and economic assets. The project is being led by Cumbria Tourism on behalf of Cumberland Council and is funded through the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.

It also supports the development of a Cumbria Food & Drink Strategy, a key objective within the county’s Destination Management Plan.

‘Inspiring Food & Drink on the Cumbria Coastal Route’ will conclude with a light lunch showcasing local produce, giving attendees the chance to network and build new connections.

The event is open to any business operating within the visitor economy along the Cumberland coastal area.
