New Hadrian’s Wall tour bus explores iconic World Heritage Site

Visitors can find new ways to experience 2,000 years of history along the Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site this summer, thanks to new bus tours being run by Open Book Visitor Guiding and supported through ‘See More: Cumbria and the Lake District’.

Departing from Carlisle, the historic capital city of Cumbria, two separate ‘Discover Hadrian’s Wall’ tours will take passengers to some of the key locations along the most significant monument built by the Romans in Britain.

The 5 hour weekday tour runs Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until mid-September. As well as introducing passengers to the Roman history and sights of Carlisle, the trip takes in views of the 13th century Lanercost Priory and includes a stop at Birdoswald Fort – the longest continuous stretch of Hadrian’s Wall.

Knowledgeable local tour guides will accompany passengers as they head east from Cumbria into the Northumberland National Park, showing them the fascinating remains of the Vallum at Cawfields. There is also an option to visit the Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum, or view the dramatic scenery from a 360 degree vantage point at Housesteads Roman Fort.

A slighter shorter 4 hour version of the tour is also available on Saturdays until the end of August. This route is also timed to pick up train passengers travelling to Carlisle Station on the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway line.

The new Discover Hadrian’s Wall tours are supported through the ‘See More: Cumbria and the Lake District’ programme, which is helping enhance the quality of visitor travel to the county’s international destinations.

See More Programme Manager, Nicola Parker, says, “Hadrian’s Wall is an iconic place, known to visitors the world over. By starting these new Discover Hadrian’s Wall tours, we hope that more people will be able to experience the unique history and heritage of this ancient monument from a new perspective, under the watchful eye of knowledgeable and friendly guides.

Carol Donnelly MBE, who manages Open Book Visitor Guiding, has over 35 years of experience in interpreting heritage, culture and landscape. Carol says, “We know there is demand for direct transport to Hadrian’s Wall and the opportunity to learn more about this fascinating area, and hope that visitors will make the most of our fantastic tours on offer. It’s a great way for some of our international passengers in particular to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site in style and comfort.”
