As an organisation based in one of the UK’s most distinctive landscapes, we recognise the importance of managing our own environmental impact. Sustainability is not only something we promote across the visitor economy, but also something we need to demonstrate in how we operate.
We have taken two significant steps to reduce emissions linked to our premises and business travel. These actions form part of our internal Sustainable Development Action Plan, which guides how we improve our environmental performance and move towards Net Zero as an organisation.
Solar power at our Staveley headquarters
In early 2026, we installed 40 solar panels at our Staveley office, delivered by Cumbria Tourism member Love Solar. The system is expected to generate around 18,200 kWh per year over its 25-year lifespan.
With the building now fully occupied and public EV charging points available on site, this equates to around 50% of our annual electricity usage. It reduces our reliance on grid electricity and provides greater certainty around long-term energy costs.
The installation is expected to lower emissions associated with running our headquarters while saving around £6,000 per year at current rates.

Transitioning to fully electric travel
Through our Strategic Partnership with Lloyd Motor Group, we have transitioned to a fully electric vehicle, taking delivery of a BYD ATTO 2 as our sole company car.
Business travel remains an essential part of our role, whether meeting members, attending events or representing Cumbria across the north west. On average, our EV use saves around 370 kg of CO2e per month, equating to approximately 4,440 kg per year.
The vehicle also allows us to speak from direct experience about travelling by electric vehicle across Cumbria, supporting wider confidence in the county’s growing charging infrastructure.
