Guardians of Grub

It’s estimated that the Hospitality and Food Service industry throw £3.2billion of wasted food into the bin every year. That’s an average cost of £10,000 for every outlet in the UK!

With new legislation set to come into force in March 2025, requiring any organisation with 10+ staff to separate out and dispose of food waste separately, the cost might be about to rise.

According to WRAP, if food waste were a country, it would be the world’s third largest carbon emitter after China and the USA. So wasted food can have a massive impact on your organisations carbon footprint as well as your bottom line.

Cumbria Tourism have teamed up with the Guardians of Grub as part of the Westmorland and Furness Green Enterprise Hub, to provide a personalised approach to food waste reduction. And best of all, it’s all completely free to SME’s in the Westmorland and Furness area.

The scheme involves:

  • 1 Week of food waste monitoring to identify key areas of waste and produce a personalised report (don’t worry, we provide you with everything you need to do this and input all the data for you)
  • 2 hour face to face or online session to run through the report and discuss waste reduction solutions for your organisation. Further online training/resources will also be provided.
  • 1/2 weeks to implement some of the solutions discussed
  • Follow up week of food waste monitoring to see how the changes have impacted
  • 2 hour – Face-to Face or online session to develop a Food waste reduction action plan for your organisation to take forward

On completion participants will receive a Guardian of Grub official badge of honour, to share on menu’s, marketing materials and social media.
