4Recruitment and retention of staff is a major concern for many of our members (77% according to our latest Business Performance Survey), and with our industry providing 38,000 FTE positions across the county, plus the Government’s immigration proposals, it is vital that we work together to source enthusiastic and committed new staff.
Looking at our own in county future workforce, Cumbria Tourism is working alongside the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) and key partners to promote local career opportunities to schools and colleges within the county.
The CLEP has established a careers hub to liaise between schools and businesses but at present it does not have enough ambassadors from our sector to volunteer to work with schools and colleges to help motivate and inspire.

There are opportunities for businesses to establish direct relationships with a local school and college on a strategic level, committing on average an hour a month to develop relationships with employers and highlight how the county’s opportunities can be best marketed to our young people. We are also looking for inspiring representatives from businesses to visit schools and colleges and talk about their career path, the options available for young people and the benefits our industry offers.
With many unaware of the surprisingly high-paid roles and the county’s worldwide reputation as a visitor destination this is a fantastic opportunity no only to inspire and enthuse the next generation of workers but also for your staff to develop their confidence and presentation skills as they promote your brand. Are you open to providing work experience opportunities for young people withing the county? Perhaps you already do but want to spread the word further. Involvement in this scheme can help promote your vacancies further within the county, helping you to source talented young people as they develop key workplace skills within your business.
